Jury Duty - Hardship Option

Not that I'm not civic minded per say, but, a measly $12.00 per day for jury duty service. With a round trip mileage of 120 miles to the courthouse and back I'm in the hole with just gas and vehicle maintenance. Not to mention the unspecified number of days the trial may last, any sane self employed home inspector has to ask, is there any way out? Of the options to be released from jury duty only one remotely looks like a candidate. That's the one that says that jury duty would create a financial hardship on the payment of daily living expenses.

I had luck with this option before in the State of Illinois, now I'm going to try it again down here in Arizona. To elect this option you must provide supporting documents. Don't get to carried away with what this entails, just take a look at my supporting document. A simple one paragraph letter a little on the vague side. This is the same letter I used in Illinois. I figure its worth a try again. What's the worst that could happen? A request for a bank statement, or worst case - serving with the possibility of losing a Realtor(s) or customer(s) to another inspector. And insult to injury, the loss of badly needed revenue.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am a self-employed person and the sole employee of my company. Leaving my phone unattended and unreachable during business hours would cause great harm as my business depends on immediate response. Losing any business at this critical point with a low bank balance could quite possibly lead to the necessity of a loan to pay daily living expenses.

I respectfully ask to be excused at this time from jury duty.

Sincerely,

Bob Kille
